Mages and your roles in 25 man raiding:

A mages role in end game content (aside from being a vending machine) is a very simple one IMO. Your Job consists of DPS, CC and staying alive. Let’s look at each.

1) DPS – Aim High! Things to look at to reach this goal is A) your spec. Is your spec a viable raiding DPS spec. If your focus is on the end game content makes sure your spec is also for the end game content. B) Gem, spend the time and gold to put proper, high end BLUE gems in your gear. They run between 30-60g each but are well worth your investment. C) Enchants- make sure once you get a new piece of gear that you have the mats ASAP to enchant that new item. Proper enchant will increase your DPS.

2) CC – Part of our job is Crowd Control. When you are asked to sheep a mob that becomes your primary function. Remember that in the 25 man content you can generally count on a mob staying sheeped for 8-10 seconds. Make a focus/sheep macro so all you have to do is click the button to reapply the sheep. This will allow you to stay focused on the target you are DPS down while being able to sheep the mob you are responsible for with out having to retarget him.

3) Staying alive – Sounds simple and it is. You cannot always count on a healer to throw you a heal, so be prepared to use health pots, health stones and bandages to keep yourself healed. The tanks are getting hit for 11k damage now and the healers main focus will be the tanks. Having you miss DPS on a boss for 10 seconds because you had to bandage yourself is much better then losing your DPS for the rest of the fight because you were waiting for a heal from a healer.

Finally, performance is looked at based on what you are asked to do, not just DPS. I want to stress how successful we are in raiding will depend on our total performance, not just one aspect of it.

Figure out how to do this in a 5 man instance not while in a 25 man raid.

Focus Macro:
#showtooltip
/clearfocus [target=focus,dead]
/focus [target=focus,noexists]
/script SetRaidTarget("focus", 1)
/cast [target=focus]Polymorph
/stopmacro [nogroup]
/s --== Sheeping and Marking "%t" ==--
